Once your order is placed, I send you a sketch. Wrong ear, wrong tilt of the head, wrong hat — tell me and I change it. Only when you say yes do I go to ink and colour. Nobody has ever received a portrait they had not already seen and approved.

When a dog of fourteen years is gone, a picture generated in eleven seconds is not a comfort.
For memorial portraits I work only in watercolour, only from the photographs you choose, and I take the time it takes — usually three weeks. You see the sketch first and we talk about it. Then the painting travels to you, signed and dated, with his name written on the back in pencil.
If your children want copies, the high-resolution scan comes with it, so prints can be made here in the United States.

Questions people ask
Which animals do you draw?
Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, birds — anything with a face I can read. Pets get exactly the same care as the people I have been drawing for twenty-five years. Send a clear photo and say which of the two collections you want.
What photograph should I send?
Daylight, eyes visible, taken at his height rather than from above. Two or three photographs are better than one. A slightly blurry phone picture from years ago still works if the eyes are readable — send it and I will tell you.
Can you draw me together with my pet?
Yes, and that is one of the most popular requests. Send a photograph of yourself and one of your animal, and I draw both in a single picture. From $34 for two faces.
Funny or serious — which should I choose?
A caricature is the better gift when the occasion is light: a birthday, a retirement, a joke between friends. A watercolour is the better choice when the picture is meant to stay on a wall, or when the animal has died. If you cannot decide, I can work somewhere between the two.
Do you use AI at any stage?
No. Pen, brush, watercolour, paper. The only machine involved is the scanner that makes the file. The film at the top of this page shows a cat portrait taking shape, from the first pencil lines to the finished watercolour.
How long does it take to reach the United States?
A file by email arrives the same day or the next morning. An original painting takes about two weeks from the day you approve the sketch, with tracked US shipping and customs included. Printed items are made in the United States and arrive in seven to twelve working days.
What if I do not like the sketch?
You tell me what is wrong and I redo it. That is exactly what the sketch stage is for.
