Real or Printed?

Thousands of listings promise a “100% hand-painted portrait from your photo.” Many of them deliver a generated or digitally processed image, printed on paper and sometimes touched with a little real paint. The words on the listing prove nothing. Six checks do — and they take about two minutes before you pay.

It’s arithmetic, not suspicion

A watercolor portrait of a face takes a trained artist somewhere between four and twelve hours, plus the study, the corrections and the scan. That is a day of work by a skilled human being. Now look at the listing: a “large original watercolor” at $40, delivered in four days, from a shop showing 20,000 sales. Ask yourself how many days there are in a week — and how many original paintings one pair of hands can finish in one of them. You don’t need to accuse anyone. You just need to do the division.

Six checks

What to look at before you pay

Check 01

The price-per-hour test

Divide the price by the hours the work would actually take. A real hand-made portrait sits somewhere between $95 and several thousand dollars depending on medium, size and the artist’s standing. Below roughly $50 for an “original painting”, the arithmetic stops working: nobody can pay rent painting for eight hours at that rate.

Red flagAn “original hand-painted artwork” priced like a printed poster.
Check 02

The turnaround test

Paint has to dry. Watercolor layers need to set before the next one goes on; acrylic and oil need considerably more. Add the study, your revisions and the shipping. A genuine original portrait realistically takes one to four weeks, and most working artists say so plainly.

Red flagA physical original painting promised in 24 to 72 hours.
Check 03

The volume test

Look at the number of sales and reviews, then at the number of people in the studio. Tens of thousands of “hand-painted originals” from a team of three or four is not a busy workshop — it’s an industrial process. One artist produces a few hundred serious pieces a year, not thousands.

Red flagEnormous sales volume, tiny team, uniform delivery times.
Check 04

The wording test

Read the small print to the very end, past the headline. The revealing phrases are always there: “printed on archival paper”, “digitally mastered”, “hand-painted techniques and software”, “digital download”, “digital impasto style”. Those sentences are not lies — they are the truth, placed where nobody reads it.

Red flag“Hand-painted” at the top, “printed” or “digital” at the bottom.
Check 05

The sameness test

Open ten customer examples side by side. A human hand wanders: the framing shifts, the background changes its mind, some pieces are visibly better than others, the signature moves. An automated pipeline produces the opposite — identical lighting, identical crop, identical brush texture, subject after subject. A reverse image search finishes the job: if those examples appear elsewhere, on other shops or in generated-image galleries, you have your answer.

Red flagFifty portraits that look like the same painting wearing different faces.
Check 06

The progress-photo test

This is the one that settles it, because it cannot be faked after the fact. Ask for a photo of your commission halfway through — pencil lines still showing, paint still wet, the sheet on the actual drawing table. The detail that locks it: ask for a slip of paper with your name and today’s date placed beside the work. A generated image has no halfway. It exists, or it doesn’t.

Red flagExcuses, delays, or a “studio photo” that is clearly not your piece.
Check 07

The reviews-and-receipt test

Two things sellers rarely expect. First, read the negative and neutral reviews, not the five-star ones — that is where a buyer writes “it doesn’t look painted” or “it arrived flat”. Second, ask for a written line in the order confirmation: “original physical artwork, hand-painted by [name], no AI generation, not a print.” A sentence like that turns a spoken promise into part of the agreed description — and that is exactly what gives you a remedy if the parcel says otherwise.

Red flagA seller who happily says it out loud but won’t write it down.

The one message to send any seller

Four questions, one message. A real artist answers all four in a couple of sentences and is usually pleased to be asked.

Hello — before I order, could you confirm four things?

1. Will I receive the original physical artwork, or a print of it?
2. Is it painted or drawn by hand after I place my order, rather than generated or processed digitally?
3. Could you send me a progress photo of my piece, with a slip of paper showing my name and the date beside it?
4. Who is the artist, and where can I see more of their work?
5. Could you confirm in writing that this is an original physical artwork, hand-painted by you, with no AI generation, and not a print?
6. Could you show me the back of the finished piece before it ships?

Thank you.

Watch what comes back. Straight answers to all four, with a name attached, mean you’re in the right place. Vague reassurance, “100% handmade!” repeated louder, or silence on question three is your answer too.

And when it arrives

How the parcel tells you the truth

A printAn original
The surfacePerfectly flat and even, ink sitting on top of the paperPaper cockled where the water went, pigment sunk into the fibers, visible brush edges
Under a lampUniform sheen; sometimes a faint dot pattern under magnificationSome passages catch the light and others don’t — that’s real paint
The backClean, blank, machine-trimmedGhosting of the heavier washes, deckle or hand-cut edges, sometimes a pencil note
The signaturePart of the printed image, identical on every copySits on top of the paint, in a different material, slightly different every time
The mistakesNone. Ever.A corrected line, a stray drop, a passage reworked — the fingerprints of a human afternoon

None of this makes prints dishonest, by the way. A good art print of a real drawing is a lovely, affordable object — provided the seller calls it what it is.

Complimentary HD video included

Your artwork, and an HD video of its creation

Every original artwork shipped from France comes with a complimentary short HD video of its creation: watch my hand at work, from the first marks to the finished piece.

An example of the creation video: a humorous illustration about tourism in Arcachon, featuring its remarkable Notre-Dame-des-Passes church. View the finished artwork.

Common questions

How can I tell if a custom portrait is AI-generated?

The listing itself won’t tell you. Use the arithmetic instead: a price far below what a day of skilled work costs, a physical “original” promised in 24 to 72 hours, tens of thousands of sales from a handful of people, and product photos that all share identical framing and lighting. Then ask for a progress photo of your own commission — a generated image has no halfway stage.

Is “hand-painted” a legally protected term?

Not in any way you can rely on. Sellers use it alongside descriptions that later mention printing on archival paper or digital processing. Treat the phrase as marketing, and verify with the four questions above.

What should a real hand-made portrait cost?

Independent artists generally charge from around $95 for a small ink-and-watercolor piece up to several thousand for a large oil by an established name, with most commissioned originals landing between $150 and $900. What matters is that the price plausibly pays for the hours the work takes.

How long should it take?

One to four weeks is normal for an original: study, painting, drying, your revisions, then shipping. Digital files can legitimately arrive the same day — but a file is not an original, and an honest seller distinguishes the two clearly.

Are AI-image detectors reliable?

Not reliably enough to decide on. These tools return probabilities rather than proof and get it wrong in both directions — national cybersecurity agencies say so explicitly. Use them as an extra hint at most: the only solid verification is about the process, not the image.

What if the seller paints over a print?

That is the most common workaround when someone is asked whether a piece is hand-painted. Ask the question that settles it: was paint applied on top of a print, in what proportion, and will the printed layer remain visible under or around the paint?

Are art prints a bad thing?

Not at all. A print made from a genuine hand-made drawing is an excellent, affordable way to own the image. The problem is never the print — it’s calling a print an original.

Should I ask for a written statement?

Yes, and it costs the seller nothing if the work is genuine. Ask for one line in the order confirmation: original physical artwork, hand-painted by a named artist, no AI generation, not a print. That sentence becomes part of the agreed description — which is what turns a disappointment into a claim.

What if I’ve already ordered something and I’m not sure?

Ask the seller the four questions anyway, and when the parcel arrives, check the surface, the back and the signature against the table above. Most marketplaces and card issuers take item-not-as-described claims seriously when a product sold as an original turns out to be a printed reproduction.

Full disclosure

This guide was written by someone with a stake in it

Sébastien Rieu has been drawing caricatures and portraits by hand for 25 years, in India ink, watercolor and acrylic, in Bordeaux, France — and has been on the losing end of this confusion more than once. Every one of the six checks above can be run on his own work: named artist, 25-year portfolio, France 3 national television, progress photos on request, prices that pay for the hours, and a page that says plainly which products are signed originals and which are prints. Run the checks on him too. That’s the point.
